Ol' Fashion Summertime Treat

The hot weather has finally arrived, ushering in the days of summer picnics and family gatherings. Food, of course, is an important part of these events. We fire up the grill, set the sun tea jug on the porch, and slice the watermelon; all the while hoping the bees and flies don't take more than their fair share of our feasts. Summer fare offers us so many choices to refuel and refresh, from hot dogs and hamburgers, to fruit salads and relish trays, the mouth watering list goes on and on! But no picnic would be complete without dessert!
Pies, cakes, cookies and brownies are common additions on the red and white checked tablecloth, but there was a time when frosty crocks of homemade ice cream made the menu. Today it seems visits to the local ice cream parlors and freezers full of popsicles are more practical ways to enjoy frozen summer treats, but many of us may remember the days when making your own ice cream was a fun, inexpensive and, of course, delicious activity.
If you've never tasted homemade ice cream, you need to. It's delicate structure of sweet ice crystals and creaminess are a taste-bud's joy. Couple that with the pride of knowing you made it yourself and you are certainly in for an unforgettable treat! Here are a couple easy ice cream recipes you can try:

EasyServes:
1 quart.Ingredients
2 cups half-and-half
1 cup whipping cream
1 cup minus 2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons peach preserves (not jelly)
1 vanilla bean, split and scraped
Directions
Combine all ingredients (including the bean and its pulp) in a large saucepan and place over medium heat. Attach a frying or candy thermometer to inside of pan. (see note below) Stirring occasionally, bring the mixture to 170 degrees F. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly. Remove the hull of the vanilla bean, pour mixture into lidded container and refrigerate mixture overnight to mellow flavors and texture.

Freeze mixture in ice cream freezer according to unit's instructions. The mixture will not freeze hard in the machine. Once the volume has increased by 1/2 to 3/4 times, and reached a soft serve consistency, spoon the mixture back into a lidded container and harden in the freezer at least 1 hour before serving.

NOTE: If you do not have a thermometer, bring the mixture just barely to a simmer. As soon as you see a bubble hit the surface, remove it from the heat. Do not let it boil

Happy Memorial Day 2011

Memorial Day is the day we remember and honor those who have died in the line of service for our country. We pay homage and celebrate those brave souls who have fought and died for the freedoms we cherish today. Memorial Day became officially proclaimed on May 5th 1868. The date has changed several times, and the southern states didn't participate until after WWI, but in 1971 it became a nationally recognized holiday. The Memorial Day weekend falls just as the warm days of summer near and schools let out for summer break, so it has also become the marker for the start of the summer season.
As this Memorial weekend comes, what will you be doing to celebrate? Putting the Flag out is the most common gesture of memorial. But, summer picnics and cookouts are also top on the list for most people. Local swimming pools open up, and families flock to neighboring beaches and parks. Whatever activities we choose to do this weekend, we should remember those who fought and died in service of the American people. To those brave souls, thank you.
Have a wonderful Memorial weekend everyone!

A re-cap of Opening Day 2011

We want to thank everyone who came out to see us February 19th for opening day, the kick off of the 2011 ice cream season! It was a sunny day, but the blustery air made for a cold afternoon. The temperature stayed in the low thirties all day. Still, thousands of our loyal customers showed up to get free cones.

The Free Day tradition began in 1953, when Durbin Magic Freeze founders Jack and June Durbin, first opened for business on May 5th of that year. They decided to offer the public free cones of their new soft-serve custard so that people would taste how great their ice cream was and hopefully come back for more. It worked; immediately their little ice cream shop became a local favorite. After a couple years, Free Day became less about gaining new customers and more about celebrating the start of the ice cream season, and a special way to thank our customers.

On a typical Free Day we give away between two and three thousand ice cream cones! Our visitors range in age from little babies getting their first bite of Durbin's ice cream, to 90 year old friends who have been coming since day one! We even get several 4-legged friends whose owners get them their very own cones to enjoy! This year was no exception.

It's always great to see familiar faces and hear about our fans who have been our patrons for years. Waiting for our two o'clock opening that day were local sisters Beth and Jill who said they've been coming to Durbin's Free Day since they were young, and now they're bringing their own families. One gentleman said he used to live right across the street, and walked over all the time for ice cream. Now he lives further away but still visits as much as he can, especially for Free Day. One of our many great customers and Facebook fans, Erica, brought her daughter out for some sunshine and ice cream. They sat in the parking lot enjoying their cones, and we enjoyed seeing Erica's daughter's ice cream smile!

This year we had people from Norton, Wadsworth, Doylestown, Akron, Munroe Falls, Copley and of course, Barberton. But there are always those we meet who come from much further away. This year we found a young man from Tennessee here visiting friends and getting his first Durbin's vanilla cone. We don't know if he enjoyed the weather, but he looked like he was enjoying his cone!
In years past we've even had visitors from as far away as Florida and California. But no matter where our visitors come from, we appreciate every single one of you. And, we certainly want to thank our hometown fans from Barberton for always supporting us. In spite of a long, cold winter, we are really excited for this season. We've already seen a lot our old friends returning for ice cream, plus a lot of new faces, and that's wonderful!

Free Day is a really fun tradition for us. It builds great memories for us and hopefully for our customers. So thank you again for coming out, and we hope you'll be back to see us soon!

The Presidential Dessert

Because today is Presidents Day, it's only fitting that our inaugural blog be about Presidents. Yes, our presidents like ice cream too. In fact, our very first president, George Washington, was an ice cream lover. His first taste of the frozen delight came while celebrating with the French in Philadelphia. After returning to Mount Vernon, the newly smitten Washington spent $200 over the summer on ice cream. Using the CPI, that's almost $5000 in today's dollars. Now that's a lot of ice cream! Washington even purchased his own ice cream machine to serve his afternoon guests at his home.Thomas Jefferson was also an ice cream aficionado. He purchased his ice cream machines after learning to make the delight while living in France. Jefferson hired a French chef to make his ice cream for his guests at Monticello. Later he became one of the first Presidents to serve ice cream at the White House. Lincoln and Madison both served ice cream at their inaugurations, and Truman served it to poker pals. But, one U.S. President actually earned a living with ice cream. President Barack Obama used to work at Baskin Robbins in 1979 while living in Hawaii.
Yes, this simple, frozen treat has captivated even the most presidential of hearts, as well as the rest of their constituents.

So today, Presidents Day, we pay homage to our country's great leaders: I scream! You scream! Even Presidents scream for ice cream!
